Should Blacks boycott the NFL for their treatment of Colin Kaepernick?
Sadly it has been announced that negotiations between Colin Kaepernick and several NFL teams has broken down which has left the socially conscious quarterback without a home and a paycheck. There has been a slue of controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick and whether NFL Teams (who had been reluctant to sign the controversial qb ever since he started speaking out against police brutality last season. Now … the question for the African America community is what if Colin Kaepernick isn’t signed, will you boycott the NFL this season?
It’s no secret that black people love football and the responses from our question ranged from ” absolutely yes” to “why should I do that? I love football. ” Obviously, we’ve been excited to see the support for the movement and disappointed in many of the same selfish, apathetic behaviors that have kept us subservient for centuries.
Granted, Kaepernick isn’t the star QB many NFL analyst suspected he could be when he first started in the league. However, the man has led his team to the Superbowl, which is something most QBs can’t say, is still one of the most athletic players at the position in the league, had a decent year on a poor team last year and is clearly better than the majority of backup quarterbacks in the NFL.
So, why isn’t he signed?
Well..the short answer is; the NFL is not concerned with “Black issues.” Some have argued that the NFL can’t be racist because of the amount of Black players currently in the league. Well…the NFL has no African American Ownership, not even minority stake ownership, so the concept of racial bias in an environment with little diversity is bound to happen as we are seeing here.
Sources contend that the NFL executives hate Kaepernick and the “controversy” he brings to the locker room. We disagree.
For Black America The Truth Is…
Kaepernick stood up for us when he didn’t have to, he was mocked by conservative media, and lost millions of dollars in salary and endorsements in the process. He has enough money and fame to avoid many of the issues and pitfalls we face in America, but that didn’t stop him from bringing an important issue to the forefront by taking a knee…
